Favorite spot #1: Makena Beach

Okay, Makena Beach takes first place. This spot was amazing! A large, gorgeous beach with soft golden sand and gorgeous blue water at the Southeast end of Maui. We spent one afternoon here and then came back to spend most of another day too.


Practically empty, although more people came and went throughout the day and there were two lifeguard stations at that far end of the beach.

Nothing behind the beach but the gorgeous upcountry mountains. It was so quiet and remote and gorgeous. Awesome! (we said that word about two hundred time every day)

We set up camp for the day and completely relaxed in the sun. I've always wanted to go on vacation, lay on the sand, stare at the water, and do nothing. I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity.

We also tossed around the aerobie, walked up and down the beach, played in the water, wrote in the sand, took silly pictures of us with the tripod and 12-second timer, watched many whales jumping in the ocean, and even explored "little beach"... We read about Makena beach in our Maui travel book. It mentioned the main beach known as "big beach" and a smaller beach called "little beach". It is a smaller beach at the North end that you get to by climbing up the rocks and over the hill to the other side. The book stated that, even though it's illegal, it's known to be "clothing optional" but we didn't think much of it. Many people were climbing the rocks up and over so we went to check it out. Well, we were shocked and surprised. It was clothing optional --- and everyone took advantage of that option ta-not-to. But we now can say we spent about 15 seconds at "little beach" in Maui.









Using our camera timer set up in the sand on a mini tripod - We were trying to get pictures of us swimming in the waves and the camera took three consecutive pictures at a time - this picture got a shot of someone running past :)
